History & Significance

Tacitus records that in the years following Scapula death, the Silures pressed against every Roman position with relentless vigour. A fort guarding the lower Usk and the route into the Forest of Dean was attacked by Silurian raiders who drove off the garrison and plundered its stores. The attack demonstrated Silurian capacity to operate in the lowlands as well as the uplands.
