The Battle

History & Significance

Hertford's 1544 raid was a combined operation — the English fleet under Lord Lisle landed the army at Leith while bombarding the town from the sea. This was sophisticated joint operations warfare that would not become standard in English practice for another century. The destruction of Leith, Scotland's main port, struck at Scottish commerce and communications. The fleet then sailed south along the coast, ravaging coastal settlements.
