The Battle

History & Significance

Regent Morton moved in person through the Scottish Borders in 1574 in a large-scale punitive expedition against reiver families who had used the civil war years to operate almost unchecked. Morton hanged reivers, demolished peel towers, and imposed a system of warden accountability that had not been enforced since the 1560s. His particular targets were families in Teviotdale and Liddesdale who had played both sides during the Marian civil war. The riding was one of several that established Morton's reputation for ruthless efficiency in imposing order.
