History & Significance

During the height of the Killing Time in 1685, government forces under Claverhouse conducted operations in the Nithsdale and Ayrshire border country around New Cumnock, one of the most strongly Covenanting areas of Scotland. Several Covenanting fugitives were apprehended or killed. The New Cumnock area saw some of the most intense government enforcement activity of the Killing Time period.
