History & Significance

Holt Castle on the Dee, commanding a major crossing between north-east Wales and Cheshire, was reduced by Parliament in 1646 after the fall of Chester had cut it off from relief. The castle had been an important link in the north Welsh Royalist supply chain. Parliamentary forces placed it under formal siege and the garrison surrendered without major assault when relief became impossible.
