The Battle

History & Significance

The murder of Mary's husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, at Kirk o Fields on 10 February 1567 was the most sensational political crime of the Reformation era. The house was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion but Darnley was found dead outside, apparently strangled before the blast. Bothwell was widely suspected. Mary's subsequent marriage to Bothwell three months later convinced the Protestant lords she was complicit. The murder directly caused the Confederate lords rebellion, Carberry Hill, and Mary's flight.
