The Battle

History & Significance

Oswald raised a wooden cross before battle and promised his men that this was the true God. Cadwallon was killed fleeing after the battle at a place called Denisesburna. The victory restored Northumbrian power and led directly to Oswald inviting Aidan from Iona, beginning the Lindisfarne mission that would Christianise much of England.
