The Battle

History & Significance

The kingdom of Morgannwg (Glamorgan) occupied the fertile vale of Glamorgan and was repeatedly contested by Deheubarth to the west and Gwent to the east. Following the death of Hywel Dda in 950, the southern Welsh kingdoms fell back into conflict. Morgannwg maintained a separate royal line through this period, fighting both its Welsh neighbours and periodic Norman incursions. Llancarfan was a major monastic centre and a key strategic location.
