The Battle

History & Significance

The Gododdin people of Lothian and the Forth basin were gradually squeezed between Dalriadan expansion from the north-west and Bernician pressure from the south. Aedan attacked Manaw Gododdin — the sub-kingdom around modern Slamannan and Clackmannan — as part of his drive to extend Dalriadan influence into the Lowlands. The slow destruction of the Gododdin kingdom was a defining process of early Scottish history.
