History & Significance

A significant armed conventicle was held at Torwood in Stirlingshire in November 1680 where the most radical Covenanters, the Cameronians, gathered and issued declarations renewing their war against Charles II. The Torwood Declaration went further than any previous Covenanting statement and represented the extreme wing of the movement. Government forces were alerted but the gathering dispersed before they could concentrate sufficient force to attack it.
