Catterick was a key assembly point for the Northern Rising as the earls sought to march south to free Mary Queen of Scots from Tutbury Castle. The muster demonstrated the scale of support in the North Riding — thousands of tenants followed their lords in a final expression of traditional northern magnate power. The march south was abandoned when it became clear no English Catholic gentry in the south would rise to support them.
