History & Significance

Norse raiders using Milford Haven as a deep-water anchorage raided inland through Pembrokeshire around 975. The Haven provided excellent shelter for Viking longships and was repeatedly used as a base for operations against south-west Wales. The raids along the Haven shoreline drove Welsh settlement inland from the coast in this period.
