During the Welsh revolt of Madog ap Llywelyn in 1294-95, Pembroke Castle remained a royalist base in southwest Wales. English settlers took refuge there and garrisoned it against Welsh attack. The castle's maintenance as a royalist stronghold during the revolt required active defence of its surrounding territory and supply routes. It served as a base for reconquest operations in southwest Wales.
