History & Significance

Henry VIII's strategy of terror — the Rough Wooing — used systematic destruction to force Scotland into accepting the marriage alliance with England. The Earl of Hertford led a devastating raid through the Merse, burning Kelso, Jedburgh and dozens of smaller settlements. The Merse, the breadbasket of southern Scotland, was left a smoking ruin. The tactic backfired: it drove Scotland closer to France rather than England.
