History & Significance

Harlech Castle was the very last castle to surrender in the First Civil War — in March 1647, nearly a year after the King's surrender. It had held out for years in the Wars of the Roses for the Lancastrians and now performed the same role for the Royalists. Its fall ended all armed Royalist resistance.
