The Sharpenode blockhouse on the Portland peninsula was one of several secondary fortifications built to complement Portland Castle in guarding the anchorage at Portland Roads. The combination of the main castle and outlying blockhouses created overlapping fields of fire across the whole roadstead, making it one of the most securely defended anchorages on the Channel coast.
