The Battle

History & Significance

During the brief regency of the Earl of Mar (1571-72) between the deaths of Lennox and Morton, Marian lords in the Borders took advantage of the weak central government to raid across factional lines. The Borders descended into heightened reiver activity combined with political violence — it was often impossible to distinguish political warfare from ordinary raiding. Mar's government was unable to impose order and the Border situation deteriorated until Morton took firm control.
