History & Significance

The threatened Franco-Imperial invasion of 1539 spurred the largest Thames estuary muster since the French wars of the 1490s. Gravesend and Tilbury opposite were both garrisoned; chains were stretched across the Thames and artillery positioned to deny the river to enemy shipping.
