The Battle

History & Significance

Before the climactic Field of Shirts battle, the Frasers encountered MacDonald of Clan Ranald advance parties on the shores of Loch Lochy. This preliminary skirmish confirmed that a major battle was unavoidable and both sides committed to the confrontation that resulted in the catastrophic Fraser defeat. The Loch Lochy shore terrain channelled both armies into the narrow ground where the Highland charge was most effective.
