The Battle

History & Significance

When Kett moved his rebel camp from Wymondham to Mousehold Heath overlooking Norwich on 12 July 1549, he established the organisational base of the rebellion. The encampment eventually housed perhaps 16,000 men and was governed by a rebel council sitting under the Oak of Reformation dispensing justice and managing supplies. The initial establishment of the camp and the decision to occupy this commanding position were strategically significant.
