History & Significance

Thorfinn 'the Mighty' of Orkney — who would become the greatest of the Norse earls — began asserting control over Caithness and raiding into Moray in the early eleventh century. His raids into Moray brought him into conflict with both the Scottish king Malcolm II and the mormaer of Moray. Thorfinn would eventually control an empire stretching from Shetland to Dublin before his death in 1065.
