The Earl of Essex marched through the City of London with 200 armed followers in February 1601, hoping the citizens would rise for him. Instead, he found the city indifferent and the gates being closed against him. He retreated to Essex House on the Strand, which was bombarded. Essex surrendered, was tried for treason and executed on Tower Green. The failed revolt was the last significant armed challenge to Elizabeth I.
