The Battle

History & Significance

Arnulf de Montgomery, son of Roger de Montgomery, seized the Pembroke headland in 1093 following the death of Rhys ap Tewdwr which opened south-west Wales to Norman conquest. Arnulf drove through Dyfed to the tip of Pembrokeshire and built the first castle at Pembroke, later developed by Gerald of Windsor. The conquest began the plantation of English and Flemish settlers that made south Pembrokeshire Little England beyond Wales.
