The Battle

History & Significance

One of the most consequential battles in early medieval Britain. The Northumbrian king Ecgfrith marched into Pictland against all advice and was ambushed and killed. His death ended Northumbrian dominance over Scotland and ensured the Picts would remain independent. Some historians consider it a founding moment of Scottish nationhood.
