History & Significance

Bar Hill is the highest point on the Antonine Wall and one of the most archaeologically productive fort sites in Scotland, with a deep well that has preserved organic materials. The construction of forts on the new frontier line required clearing and suppressing any tribal resistance in the construction zone. Inscriptions from Bar Hill record units from multiple provinces serving on the new wall.
