History & Significance

Part of the escalating pattern of Danish raids in the 980s. Portland, which had been the site of the very first Viking contact with England in 789, was attacked again. The raids of this period — unlike Alfred's wars — were largely met with payment rather than resistance, establishing the tribute (Danegeld) culture that Aethelred's reign became infamous for.
