The Battle

History & Significance

In 1597 the Scottish March warden conducted enforcement operations in Liddesdale specifically targeting the Armstrong clan's ongoing bloodfeud activities. The Armstrongs had used the political chaos of the 1580s and early 1590s to operate with minimal government interference. The 1597 operations in Liddesdale preceded the more systematic Kinmont Willie and Buccleuch episodes and represented an early attempt to reimpose warden authority in the most lawless valley on the Border. Several Armstrong reivers were captured and hanged at the Hermitage Castle base.
