The Battle

History & Significance

Wyatt's army marched from Rochester through Strood and Gravesend, coming ever closer to London. Artillery was used against royal ships in the Thames. The remarkable advance of a provincial rebel army to the gates of London showed the government's military weakness. Mary refused to flee London and delivered her famous Guildhall speech promising not to marry Philip without Parliamentary consent — which proved decisive in holding London.
