The Battle

History & Significance

The MacKintoshes as chiefs of Clan Chattan repeatedly attempted to assert overlordship over territories in Lochaber that the Camerons occupied. The Camerons resisted these claims through force. This engagement at Loch Lochy was one of several clashes between these two confederations over the lands of Lochaber — a conflict that James I had tried to resolve through the North Inch combat of 1396 but which continued long after.
