History & Significance

Under Antoninus Pius, the governor Lollius Urbicus reconquered the Scottish lowlands abandoned after Domitian withdrew Agricola forces in 87 AD. An inscription records that Urbicus defeated the Britons. The campaign required reducing reoccupied tribal strongholds and reestablishing the fort network. The Antonine Wall was then built 100 miles north of Hadrian Wall.

Forces Involved

Multiple legions and auxiliary units including Legio II Augusta, VI Victrix, XX Valeria
