The Battle

History & Significance

After the government victory at Bothwell Bridge, government cavalry under Claverhouse and others pursued the routed Covenanting army eastward through Lanarkshire. The pursuit was vigorous and several hundred additional Covenanters were killed or captured as they fled. Many were hunted through the countryside of Lanarkshire and Ayrshire in the days following the battle as the government moved to extinguish all armed resistance.
