The Battle

History & Significance

The second major engagement of the Armada campaign. The battle off Portland Bill (2 August 1588) saw Martin Frobisher's squadron dangerously isolated but holding firm; Drake controversially abandoned the pursuit of the Armada the previous night to capture a rich prize. Heavy cannon fire on both sides; the Spanish crescent formation held but the English gunnery was wearing down the Armada's ammunition reserves.
