History & Significance

Richmondshire in the North Riding was among the most enthusiastic areas of the Pilgrimage. The region's monasteries — Easby, Ellerton, Marrick — were threatened by dissolution, and the local gentry and commons rose en masse. The Richmondshire contingent marched with the main host to Doncaster. The area's deep religious conservatism made it a stronghold of the Pilgrimage cause.
