The monastery of Kingarth on Bute was one of the most important early Christian sites in Scotland and was repeatedly targeted by Norse raiders operating from the Firth of Clyde. Its exposed position on the southern tip of Bute made it highly vulnerable. The raids on Kingarth were part of the Norse assault on Clyde-area Christianity that included the sieges of Dumbarton.
