History & Significance

Following the total destruction of the Covenanting army at Kilsyth on 15 August 1645, Royalist cavalry conducted a pursuit of the routed Covenanting forces southward across the Forth plain toward Glasgow. The scale of the rout meant that thousands of Covenanting soldiers were scattered across the Lowlands. Montrose momentarily controlled all of Scotland south of the Highland line.
