History & Significance

The Welsh annals and Anglo-Saxon Chronicle both record fighting on the Powys-Mercia border in 822. Ceolwulf I of Mercia destroyed the Welsh fortress at Deganwy in north Wales as part of a broader campaign to push back Welsh raiders. The border zone was in constant low-level conflict throughout the ninth century before the Viking disruption reshaped the political landscape. These border raids were the bread and butter of Welsh-Mercian relations for two centuries.
