The Battle

History & Significance

After a Mercian abbot was killed by Welshmen, Aethelflaed launched a retaliatory raid deep into Wales to Brecenanmere (Llangorse Lake in Breconshire), where the king of Brycheiniog had his crannog palace. The queen of Brycheiniog and 33 companions were captured. The raid demonstrated Aethelflaed's power projection and willingness to punish raids into Mercia. The Llangorse crannog has been archaeologically excavated and the burning layer confirmed.
