Glen Moriston, running southwest from Loch Ness toward Kintail, was swept by government columns after Culloden. The glen's men had fought at Culloden. During the post-Culloden period, Prince Charles was sheltered in Glen Moriston by a small group of men — known as the Seven Men of Glen Moriston — who had sworn on a Bible to protect him, despite the £30,000 government price on his head. They guided him through the mountains. Government columns burned the glen attempting to flush out fugitives. The loyalty of ordinary Highlanders in protecting Charles — none of whom betrayed him for the reward — is one of the most celebrated facts of the '45.
