The MacDonalds of Clanranald and the MacLeods contested the Outer Hebrides throughout the sixteenth century. South Uist was Clanranald territory but subject to MacLeod raids. This engagement secured Clanranald control of the island. South Uist would remain MacDonald territory until the Clearances.
