The Battle

History & Significance

James IV invaded England in support of Perkin Warbeck, the pretender to the English throne who claimed to be Richard Duke of York. He besieged Norham Castle on the Tweed — the great Bishop of Durham fortress — with his artillery train. The castle garrison under Heron held out for six days before a counter-offensive led by the Earl of Surrey compelled the Scots to withdraw. James's army retreated rapidly across the Tweed, the campaign a failure.
