The Battle

History & Significance

Richmond in the North Riding was one of the major muster points for the Pilgrimage of Grace in October 1536. The Swaledale and Wensleydale communities gathered at Richmond under local gentry leaders, swelling the northern host that confronted the Duke of Norfolk at the Don. Richmond's muster drew on the strongly Catholic communities of the Yorkshire Dales and the residual power of the Scrope family, whose castle dominated the town. The Richmond contingent was among the most determined of the northern rebels.
