The Colchester abbot Thomas Marshall was one of three abbots executed in 1539 alongside Whiting of Glastonbury and Cook of Reading. All three refused voluntary surrender. Their simultaneous executions were intended to break remaining monastic resistance. Marshall was hanged at Colchester itself — outside his own abbey gates — as a calculated act of intimidation against the still-substantial Essex Catholic community.
