History & Significance

Donald Gorm of Sleat refused to submit to the Statutes of Iona (1609), which were designed to bring the Highland chiefs under closer government control. He expelled government agents attempting to enforce the statutes from his stronghold at Duntulm Castle. The MacDonalds of Sleat were one of the last major clan dynasties to resist the administrative reach of the Edinburgh government into Skye.
