The Battle

History & Significance

Pockthorpe Gate on the northeast side of Norwich was a repeated flashpoint during Ketts siege of the city in July-August 1549. Rebels from Mousehold Heath descended to probe the gate and exchange fire with the city garrison. The skirmishing at Pockthorpe was part of the rebel strategy of keeping Norwich under constant pressure while controlling the surrounding countryside.
