The Battle

History & Significance

After the Battle of Langside ended Mary Queen of Scots' hopes, many of her supporters — particularly in Dumfriesshire and Galloway — refused to submit to Regent Moray. Moray conducted a series of punitive campaigns through the south-west, dismantling the castles and power of Marian lords. Lord Herries and the Maxwells held out for years, leading to periodic skirmishes with government forces before eventual submission.
