History & Significance

Edinburgh served as the administrative and logistical hub for the Covenanting movement's military preparations in 1639. The city provided the Covenanters with financial resources, weapons, supplies and administrative capacity. Troops were mustered and reviewed on the Burgh Muir and Leith Links. The Edinburgh municipality was strongly Covenanting in sympathy and provided essential support for the war effort against Charles I.
