History & Significance

Wulfhere, Penda's son, re-established Mercian supremacy after the disaster of the Winwaed. He raided as far as Ashdown in Berkshire and gave the Isle of Wight and the Meonware to the South Saxons, demonstrating Mercian reach into the south. Wulfhere maintained Mercian dominance over Wessex throughout his reign.
