The Act of Proscription 1746 (comprising the Disarming Act and Dress Act) was enforced from the Fort Augustus garrison from 1747: military patrols collected weapons under the Disarming Act, and from 1 August 1747 the Dress Act banned Highland dress including the kilt, with imprisonment for a first offence and transportation for a second. The Great Glen was consolidated as a government-controlled communications corridor linking Fort William, Fort Augustus and Fort George.
