The monument comprises a fortified homestead typical of the Iron Age period in eastern Scotland, constructed with stone defences to enclose a domestic settlement. Such duns served as defended residences for elite families during the Iron Age and represent an important phase of settlement in the region before the Roman period and subsequent developments in the Scottish landscape.
