Offa's Dyke is a linear earthwork constructed during the late eighth century under the direction of King Offa of Mercia to mark and defend the border between the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and the Welsh principalities to the west. This section, located in Church Grove near Ferney Leaze in Gloucestershire, survives as a substantial bank and ditch formation typical of the monument's construction throughout its course. The earthwork demonstrates the engineering scale of Offa's ambitious frontier project, which extended approximately 150 miles from the Dee estuary in the north to the Severn estuary in the south. The Church Grove section remains an important archaeological record of eighth-century territorial demarcation and early medieval military strategy along the Anglo-Welsh border.
